Graviola is a small evergreen tree, 5-6 meters high, with large leaves of a glossy green. Produces edible fruits yellow green, heart-shaped. Graviola is typical of most of the warmer tropical areas in South and North America. The flesh of the fruit is also used to make drinks and sorbets.
We have found many active ingredients in graviola, when scientists began to study their properties in the 40s. Much of the research focused on a number of new chemical elements called Annonaceae acetogenins (see below for a confrontation between the Annona muricata and Annona montana) * and localized in the leaves, the trunk, the bark and seeds fruit. Three separate research groups have confirmed that these chemicals have significant anticancer properties and selective toxicity against various types of cancer cells (without harming healthy cells). Many of the acetogenins have demonstrated selective toxicity against tumor cells at very low doses (up to 1 part per million). In 1998 there were four published studies demonstrated anticancer properties, the anticancer and antiviral acetogenins. In 1997, a clinical study has also noted that the alkaloids present in the fruit of graviola have antidepressant properties.
The Annonaceae acetogenins are only found in the Annonaceae family to which graviola belongs. These elements have documented anticancer properties, fungicidal, insecticidal, and antimicrobial. Some studies on their mode of action have recently determined that these acetogenins are excellent inhibitors of the enzymatic processes that occur only in the membranes of tumor cells.
The Purdue University, Indiana, has conducted a huge research on acetogenins and in 1997 published a study in which it was alleged that the acetogenins of Annonaceae were not only effective in fighting tumors that were resistant to anti-cancer agents but seemed to have a special affinity. Cancer cells that survive chemotherapy can develop resistance to the agent used as well as other drugs. This phenomenon, called multi-drug resistance occurs when cancer cells establish an intracellular pump that is able to expel anticancer agents by the cell before they can kill her. Some of the latest research on acetogenins, have reported that they are able to kill these intracellular pumps and, therefore, to fight tumors resistant to drugs, by blocking the transfer of ATP into them, thus inhibiting the energy for cells.
In 1976, under a program for screening of plants of the National Cancer Institute, USA, the leaves and stem of graviola showed active toxicity against cancer cells and, after this discovery, we have moved several searches. So far, the acetogenins in graviola and / or extracts of graviola have been reported to be selectively toxic in vitro against several types of cancer cells: the prostate adenocarcinoma, the cells of pancreatic cancer, adenocarcinoma of the colon, the cancer cells liver, lymphoma cells, and cells resistant to drugs of adenocarcinoma breast. In 2003, researchers in Taiwan have documented the effectiveness of one of the acetogenins in graviola against ovarian cancer cells, cervical, breast, bladder and skin at very low doses. In 2002, however, Japanese researchers studied the effectiveness of the acetogenins on lung cancer cells, bringing as graviola could be used as an adjuvant to enhance the anticancer agents.
In the folk medicine of the tropics, we use all parts of the plant, since each party is assigned different properties and different uses. In general, the fruit and the juice of graviola Vieng administered to worms and parasites, to reduce fever, to increase milk production after giving birth, and as an astringent for diarrhea and dysentery. The seeds are being used crumbled against internal and external parasites, lice, and against worms. The bark, leaves and roots are considered sedative finally, antispasmodic, hypotensive and nerve, and are usually taken as tea.
Below is a brief overview on the uses etnomedici of graviola.

for cancer (all types)
as internal and external antimicrobial to treat a broad spectrum of bacterial infections and fungus
for internal parasites and worms
for high blood pressure
for depression, stress and nervous disorders
Properties / actions documented by research:
Antibacterial, anticancer, anticonvulsant, antidepressant, antifungal, antimalarial, antimutageno (cell protector), antiparasitic, antispasmodic, anticancer, cardiodepressivo, emetic (causes vomiting), hypotensive (lowers blood pressure), insecticidal, sedative, uterine stimulant, vasodilator
Other properties / actions documented by traditional
Antiviral cardiotonico (tones, balances, strengthens the heart), decongestant, digestive, febrifugal (reduces fever), nerve (balance / calms nerves), kills lice, vermifuge (expels worms)
Traditional preparation:
Capsules / tablets: 2g 3 times daily
Infusion: a cup 3 times a day
Tincture: 2-4ml of a 4:1 tincture three times a day
Contraindications:
Do not use during pregnancy.
Do not take along with ATP potenzianti like CoQ10.
Graviola has demonstrated hypotensive activity, vasodilatation, and cardiodepressive and is contraindicated for individuals who suffer from low pressure. Individuals who take medications against high blood pressure should consult their doctors before taking graviola and, therefore, monitor more carefully their pressure
Graviola has demonstrated in vitro antimicrobial properties. The prolonged and chronic use of this plant may lead to the reduction of bacterial flora of the digestive tract. We recommend that you take probiotics or digestive enzymes, if you make use of this plant for more than 30 days
Has demonstrated emetic properties. Large doses can cause nausea or vomiting. In the case of occurrence of these effects reduce the use
In a study on mice, administration of an extract of bark intragastricamente (at 100mg/kg), has noticed an increase in dopamine, noradrenaline, and inhibition of the release of serotonin in the cases of stress.
High doses (more than 300mg/kg) may cause drowsiness or quell. If this happens, reduce the dosage
Interaction with drugs: None reported. In any case, graviola may enhance medication against hypertension and cardiodepressivi. It can also enhance the antidepressant drugs and interfere with medication MAO inhibitors.
